Finnish children are entitled to day care after the parental allowances have come to an end. This means that day care is available for children, starting when they are just under one year up to six years of age. Day care is optional and it has to be paid for. Children are entitled to day care in Swedish or Finnish. The parents decide in which language their children will get day care. Day care is not available in Swedish throughout Finland but mainly in locations where there are Swedish-speaking Finns. The municipality provides most day care services but there are also private day care activities.
